FUNDRAISING UPDATE!
We exceeded my initial goal by raising $635! A reminder that there’s just over a month left for me to raise money for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation in honor of my second-cousin and goddaughter, Melaina. Let’s see if we can double that and then some by October 2nd to raise $1500! Groundbreaking research has already found that some of the symptoms...

I am about to go to the Bulldog happy hour by myself to think about this fucking manuscript after working on it all day at the coffee shop. Hoping that a drink will melt the braincicles.

Donate your support to the International Rett... →

I finally got a fundraising page set up through FirstGiving.com! Like I mentioned in my first post, I’m running the Twin Cities Marathon on October 2nd and am asking friends and family for their support by pledging a financial contribution that will benefit the IRSF. You can pledge $1 per mile of the marathon (26.3) or any amount that you can comfortably manage - every dollar...

Hi Guys,
I started another Tumblr! This time, I’m blogging about all the things running related, particularly as a way to keep myself accountable. Why do I need extra accountability? Well, that’s because I decided to sign up for the Twin Cities Marathon on Saturday, October 2nd (a day before I…

Awkward.
– Reading this in the comments of my papers makes me cringe :/
Nightmares and insomnia are getting really effing old.
You can do the work.

Pep Talk: You’re smart, so there are a lot of instances where you don’t have to work very hard to get by. Good for you! Sometimes though, you want to do more than get by. You want to create a result that really means something and makes you proud. When that time comes, you should probably get off the time-suck websites, take out your headphones, and really do the work. With a...

Why does this keep happening?
Something like 6 hours before a paper is due, I realize that I’ve totally conceptualized things poorly and end up pretty much starting from scratch. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH.

He picked up Erich Fromm’s On Disobedience from my bookshelf. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to read this.”*
“Have you read Fromm’s The Art of Loving? It’s one of the most influential books of my life.”
“Yeah! That is a really great book!”
And then, my heart exploded into a hundred thousand sunbursts.

MIT neuroscientists explain ‘Proustian effect’ of small details attached to big memories
Previous research has focused on the role of synapses—the connections through which neurons communicate. An individual synapse is thought to be the minimum unit necessary to establish a memory engram.
The MIT researchers found that a memory of a seemingly irrelevant detail — the kind of...

This morning, I sent my advisor an email, pouring out my heart to him regarding my research insecurities and confronting him about how I struggle with his “Asian dad” advising style, and then asking him for help….His reply?
He forwarded me a Craigslist ad for a used bike with one line, “To cheer you up!”
Yup.

What your brain is doing when you're not doing... →
jayparkinsonmd:
Over the past few years, there has been growing interest in something called “resting state functional MRI”, a technique for seeing what your brain is doing when you aren’t doing much of anything at all. It turns out that brains at rest are pretty restless, consuming far more energy than they do when doing. More interesting, “resting” activity is not random, but highly...

At St. Paul 'wet house,' liquor can be their life... →
Reading this story broke my heart and stirred up all kinds of feelings. I’m torn about how I feel about the wet house concept. On the one hand, they do provide a sense of belonging and humane treatment to a population considered to be social pariahs. On the other hand, there is a part of me that agrees with the idea that there is always hope of recovery.
When I read this article, there is a...

Early morning existential ramblings.
Hey it’s around 4:30am, and I just wrote a reaction paper for my Developmental Psych class that made me realize that I really am fascinated with, passionate about racism and discrimination research. I always get discouraged because it’s one of the topics du jour, so what would I have to bring to the table? Writing this paper and also working little by little on the crazy four study...
