A text transcript between my dad and I.
Me: Whoa a magazine is paying me to use three of my pics!
Tatang (that's Filipino for "father"): Wow...did u ask why n d price?
Me: I post some of the photos I take online. Not much, 10$ per photo. It is a gardening mag. I have had other websites use my photos and I realized I should start asking for money.
Tatang: Ya u s/d have. they saw something amazing in ur pics sellable n thats money. im so proud of u.
I am going to save this text in my phone forever, saved along with two texts from my dad that read exactly the same message: "Happy birthday, darling" *Tear*

Two weeks ago, I woke up one morning and the last image stuck in my mind from my dream was a screenshot of a photography website. My photography website. Like, a company.
Then last week, Gardening Australia Magazine asked if they could use some of my images they found on Flickr. I asked the Twitter for advice on whether I should charge, and the resounding answer was: YES! I’ve read...

One of the principles of mindfulness is Acceptance. When thrown in a pool of water, flailing in a frenzy will lead to drowning more likely than relaxing and just letting yourself float. Sometimes we get fixated on the wrong goals.
Waiting for my heaven in eleven to kick into gear…seems to be in motion for everyone around me. Trying and yet not.

Today I also:
- danced like a maniac to an audience of one 14-month old girl. She looked very confused.
- successfully ran two and a half miles without my knee revolting.
- had a great day of teaching about ethics. Lots of discussion, participation. Students came up after class to talk more and ask questions. Got the warm and fuzzies.
- supported Asian American artists at a fundraiser open mic...

I am also irked by how often reporters refer to her informally, by first name or Gaby, instead of “Rep. Giffords.”

Dear sir or madam,

On choosing faith
That Onion article on the Virgin Mary statue reminded me that I went to Catholic mass for the first time in a long time over the holiday. It makes my mom happy. Like many other salad-bar Catholics (pick-and-choose what you want to believe in!), I’ve gone for stretches without going to mass and then come back like it was the day after Confirmation. But not this time. I abstained from saying...

Lately, I’ve been struggling with this idea because it seems to be conflated with the general concept of fate or destiny. I want to believe in it. I want to believe that there is some order to the unfolding of my life and that if I follow what is...
